Using technology in the oracy classroom

Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language. It is a powerful tool for learning, and it is widely agreed that oracy is also a route to social mobility, that empowers all students to find their voice to succeed in school and life. There is a firm base of evidence that these oracy skills can, and should, be taught and with teachers developing their own digital teaching skills and the more widespread availability of digital tools, many teachers have started paying more attention to the interaction between oracy and technology in class and the beneficial impact this has on all students’ learning. In this session we shall address the natural relationship between oracy and technology and drawing on classroom-research we shall discuss how, when used effectively, technology can dramatically improve all students’ oracy skills.

Sarah Howell is an author, Voice21 International Oracy Leader, adjunct Professor at Università Politecnica delle Marche and Second Vice-President for TESOL Italy. Sarah has been running CPD sessions and courses for teachers for over 30 years and offers specialist oracy interventions with students and teachers in schools across Italy. In 2021, in response to the pandemic, Sarah co-created the Oracy Italy Group to support teachers in developing classroom talk so that all students may have access to dialogic learning and teaching. She has published extensively for primary and secondary ELT in more that 40 countries.

Lisa Kester-Dodgson is an author, Voice21 International Oracy Leader, TESOL Italy Executive committee member, teacher and teacher trainer. She has been involved in ELT and teacher training since 1990 and has published widely for both the primary and secondary sector in various countries. She offers oracy oriented CPD courses for teachers as well as oracy projects for students. Last year she co-created the Oracy Italy Group."
